We got a new bookshelf! And I’m so in love.
If you saw my IG post from last week, then you know we snagged this awesome secondhand AllModern bookshelf! We’ve been on the hunt for one since I talked about it in my interiors post back in January. We’ve had our eye on any great sales, but when we searched for secondhand options like Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace, that’s when we found this gem.
I can’t take all of the credit. My husband, Alex, is the one who actually found it! He will gladly tell you this even though it’s been my idea to get this style (insert rolling eyes emoji). I do want to point out how there’s great options for secondhand furniture. Especially, if you are trying to save your money. Plus, I’m always going to be a fan of re-purposing and recycling furniture instead of throwing it away. We can all start to do this more to save our planet!
We’re decorating the bookshelf on the cheap and being resourceful for what we already have. It’s honestly not that bad and I like how it’s turned out! Over time, I’d like to add a a real plant. I’m thinking of a philodendron brasil plant because that area of the apartment doesn’t get a lot of sunlight. For now, I’m using our fake eucalyptus garland that we’ve used many times during our wedding festivities and I put the garland in an old pot. You can easily improvise with what you got!
For advice on how to style a bookshelf, I’m using these three tips: 1. start with your larger pieces first as anchors (ie: the vase, the logs, plants). 2. add layers + height (ie: stacked books, texture from the vases, high picture frames) and 3. add the rest of the pieces in with balance (ie: don’t put items that take up space all on one side – spread it out).
I love the idea of adding more vintage and ceramic pieces. A vintage picture to go in the old picture frame would totally look amazing. I love this site, BFF Print, for vintage pictures too, like this seascape piece or this fruit + rose still life piece. Right now, I’m using a Society 6 Postcard they gave me after a recent purchase (LOL) – but the print fits and works. I love my one of a kind recycled metal whale piece (similar version here), so I want to find other special objects like that too. The vintage, ceramic and wood pieces will add warmth to the stark white metal in the bookshelf.
OUTFIT: shirt, pants, jacket (old, similar here)
Check out some of the inspiration I’m thinking about when I say vintage, unique pieces:
Aren’t they all so beautiful?! I create focused inspiration, so that I don’t lose track of what I’m envisioning. Especially, when I know this project will be forever evolving and take time.
