Why conscious living? It started when I came across Emma Watson’s Instagram post about her press tour for her upcoming movies. For some reason, her post that said “feel free to check out the @the_press_tour if you’re interested in information about sustainable fashion” caught my attention. I then when on a complete research binge on this topic, which then geared me toward the True Cost documentary. If anyone asks me where to start with sustainable & ethical fashion, I’ll always tell them to watch this documentary as a great starting point. It will make you think about fashion in a way you never have, make you cry and make you want to completely change how you shop as a consumer (at least it did with me).
I’ve always enjoyed fashion and styling and was playing around with the idea of starting a blog about this (eye roll) – I’m really not a fashion expert. But as I was planning on doing this, I did more research on fashion and fashion blogging and thought, how wasteful is this? I couldn’t relate and knew there was so much more to this industry.
After doing all of my investigation, I came to a conclusion that the fashion industry is negatively affecting these three things:
- Environment (fashion is the #2 polluter to this planet because of the process of making clothes and the amount of cloth we waste and throw away )
- Labor (workers in fashion factories are working in terrible conditions that are bad for their health -they work long hours and make little to no money)
- Health (there are many chemicals in our clothing that touch our skin daily)
As Fashion Revolution puts perfectly “Much of the global fashion industry is opaque, exploitative and environmentally damaging and desperately needs revolutionary change. We love fashion, but we don’t want our clothes to come at the cost of people or our planet.”
Ultimately, this has lead me to choose more wisely where I not only shop, but what I eat and and how I choose to slow down with life in general. And it was the biggest driving force to start The Lavender Daily. My main goal out of creating a blog is to hope my readers will consider changing the way they consume and get inspired – because I believe as consumers we have the biggest vote in how we change this industry (and other important movements too).
There is STILL an immense about to learn and it’s something I really want to tackle this year. But I will say, the small changes I’ve made so far have felt good and is a great step in the right direction.
xx
